Game Day Suggestions:

As dedicated players in a club organization we train very hard to prepare for game day. It is important that we follow a few guidelines to make sure our bodies are in top condition to perform our best on the playing field.  Here are a few simple guidelines to follow to make sure we are at our best.

Some good food choices for a pre game meal are those high in carbohydrates; breads, pasta, cereal, potatoes and fruits.

Avoid high fat and protein meals before a game because they take too long to digest and will make a player feel sluggish during a game. This is because the body is using all of its energy to digest the food in the stomach.

Some bad food choices before a game are fried foods, French fries, cheeseburgers, pizza, candy bars, and soda.

Get enough rest the night before a game (pre-game is probably not the best time for a sleep over or late night out with friends.) Drink plenty of fluid on game day. Start when you wake up drinking at least 8 ounces of water every hour. Even if you are not thirsty your body needs the extra fluid to make it through a game. Eat enough healthy food to fuel your body on game day.

Your final meal should be two to three hours before a game.

Completely avoid sugar and caffeine on game day. Although you may feel an initial surge on energy, you will come crashing down. When you eat sugar and caffeine it causes the blood sugar to rise and fall dramatically. This will cause a player to feel tired and sluggish.  Also, some people may feel a rush of bodily energy but are unable to concentrate on the game.

Soccer is a very mental game; focus and concentration are key elements.

Follow these tips and you will be ready to do your best on the field. You work so hard to learn the game, do what is necessary to play it.
